Biofeedback is surprisingly effective for managing anxiety. Here's how it works...

Biofeedback monitors how much your heart beat speeds and slows. The rhythm of this beat is linked to your breathing; when you inhale, your heart-rhythm increases and it slows slightly when you exhale.  Take a deep breath and you may feel better. Many people with anxiety simply breath too fast.  Biofeedback training works by helping you slow down your breath rate synchronizing it with your heart rhythm.

Biofeedback helps those suffering from anxiety disorders, stress

Biofeedback, a way to control anxiety, stress and other disorders, has been around for decades.

"It was quite popular in the 60s and 70s," therapist Joy Ashbaugh says.
But it's recently made a comeback -- in part because of doctors' resistance to prescribing narcotics for certain disorders.
"It's easier sometimes to just take a pill," Ashbaugh says. "than it is to work through."
But for Ashbaugh, she knows first hand how effective biofeedback's visual techniques can be.
"I saw at an early age the power that it had," she said.
Ashbaugh suffered from tension headaches years ago, and after biofeedback helped her condition, she wanted to use the techniques to help others.
She tests patients' body temperature, which projects their stress levels through an image of water.
When the water moves, the patient is feeling relatively peaceful.
But when the water on the screen was still - it means the patient is feeling stressed.
Ashbaugh says it only takes patients a few sessions to learn to handle their stress.
"It helps people gain control over certain body processes [like breathing and body temperature]," she said.
And watching biofeedback help so many - is rewarding.
"It is very effective," she said.
Ashbaugh says the goal is to help her patients get their breathing down to six breaths a minute -- which helps the body and mind relax.
